The Humanities Center’s year-long look at memory and forgetting continues with a public lecture from neuroscientist Daniela Schiller, whose work on the malleability of memory has promise for people with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, addiction, and phobias.

“The Social Life of Guns” symposium brings researchers from Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Duke, and other universities and institutions to the University of Rochester for two days to spur more research on guns and gun violence.

The Humanities Center is hosting a series of events titled “Planting a Seed: Migrant Workers in the American Landscape,” examining the long, complex, and storied history of migration from the Mexican border to the United States.

From the post-Reformation trauma of Shakespeare’s history plays, to the poignant scrapbooks created by the families of British soldiers killed in World War I, the fellowships sponsored by the Humanities Center this year focus on the interdisciplinary study of memory and forgetting.

Conceptual artist Walid Raad ’96 (PhD), an associate professor of art at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, will be the third speaker in the Humanities Center’s annual public lecture series, devoted this year to the theme of memory and forgetting.

In a 1976 journal article, Ulrich coined a phrase that has become ubiquitous: Well-behaved women seldom make history. The Humanities Center hosts the feminist historian, who will speak about writing and micro-histories.

“I think my studies at Rochester in theater and sociology and in the humanities—I took a lot of English, history, and philosophy—really were the best kind of preparation for work in communication and journalism,” says Charles Kravetz ’74.

The Humanities Center has announced its slate of public lecture series speakers for this year’s theme of “memory and forgetting.”

“I want our center to touch the life of every University of Rochester undergraduate,” says Joan Shelley Rubin, who was installed as the inaugural Ani and Mark Gabrellian Director of the Humanities Center in May.

“Libraries have been managing data for centuries,” says Marcy Strong, head of metadata service at River Campus Libraries. And in the new field of data science, practitioners will rely on work University librarians have long done.
