Shift Differential

This policy applies to: All hourly paid staff members, including those in the Clinical, Associate, Professional, and Leadership Career Streams.

Staff members who are represented by a labor union should refer to the applicable collective bargaining agreement to determine what shift differential, if any, they may be entitled to.

I. Policy

Hourly-paid staff required to work an evening, night, or weekend shift (as defined below) receive a shift differential based on the following table. The shift differential is paid in addition to the regular hourly rate for all hours worked on the shift. (An interruption of work for a meal or rest period of one hour or less will not disqualify a shift from eligibility for shift differential.)

Shift** Hourly Paid Staff *Clinical Staff (Licensed/Certified)
Weekday Evening $1.00 per hour $2.00 per hour
Weekday Night $1.75 per hour $3.75 per hour
Weekend Days $1.00 per hour $2.00 per hour
Weekend Evening $2.00 per hour $4.00 per hour
Weekend Night $2.75 per hour $5.75 per hour

**Hourly paid staff are eligible for either Staff Differential or Clinical Staff (Licensed/Certified) Differential.

*Clinical Staff (Licensed/Certified) shift differentials apply to hourly paid staff in non-exempt job profiles aligned to the Clinical Career Stream, within job categories CLT, LPN, RNN, RNT, or CTS and that require a job-specific clinical license or certification. Licenses/certifications such as a driver’s license, BLS, BLS-HP, ACLS, and PALS on their own do not qualify as a required job-specific clinical license or certification.

In the event a staff member holds a position that qualifies for the Clinical Staff (Licensed/Certified) shift differentials pursuant to this Policy, but that staff member is exempt from the requirement to obtain the required job specific clinical license or certification pursuant to applicable law, rules, regulations or other state/federal licensing/certification requirements (e.g., due to prior years of experience), that staff member will be eligible for the Clinical Staff (Licensed/Certified) shift differentials in accordance with this Policy.

In the event a staff member holds a position that qualifies for the Clinical Staff (Licensed/Certified) shift differentials pursuant to this Policy, but that staff member has not yet obtained the required job specific clinical license or certification, that staff member will be eligible for the Hourly Paid Staff shift differentials, rather than the Clinical Staff (Licensed/Certified) shift differentials, until such time as the staff member obtains the required job specific clinical license or certification.

II. Guidelines

A. Definitions

Shift: An employee’s scheduled work period.

Evening Shift: Any work period which includes four or more consecutive hours between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. Examples of evening shift are 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.; 4 p.m. to midnight, etc. Note: When a staff member works four or more consecutive hours between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. evening shift differential will be paid for the entire shift.

Night Shift: Any work period which includes four or more consecutive hours between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Examples of night shift are 11 p.m. to 11:30 a.m.; midnight to 8 a.m., etc. Note: When a staff member works four or more consecutive hours between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. night shift differential will be paid for the entire shift.

Weekend Shift: Any work period which includes four or more consecutive hours between 11 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. on Monday or any 12-hour period beginning after 3 p.m. Friday and ending before 8 a.m. Monday.

Weekend Evening and Weekend Night shifts differentials apply when Evening and Night Shifts (as defined above) fall in the defined Weekend Shift period.

B. Overtime Pay Calculation

When hours worked qualify for overtime pay, any applicable shift differential is included in the employee’s regular rate of pay and is factored into the calculation of the overtime premium.

III. Procedures

  1. Work Beyond Regular Schedule:Staff members who work beyond their regular schedule will continue to receive the appropriate shift differential, when applicable based on the above criteria. Staff members who are eligible for shift differential because they have worked four consecutive hours within the applicable range of time, will receive shift differential for their entire shift, including any hours worked immediately after their scheduled shift.
  2. Work Prior to Regular Schedule: Staff members who are called in prior to their scheduled shift will receive the appropriate shift differential, when applicable based on the above criteria. Staff members who are eligible for shift differential because they have worked four consecutive hours within the applicable range of time, will receive shift differential for their entire shift, including any hours worked immediately before their scheduled shift.
  3. Call-In:Staff members called in to work for more than four consecutive hours will receive the appropriate shift differential for that shift, when applicable based on the above criteria. If called in for less than four hours, shift differential pay does not apply, but call-in provisions would (see Policy #214 Call-In Pay).
  4. Paid Leave:When the staff member’s regularly scheduled shift qualifies for shift differential (as denoted in Workday in the Work Shift field under Job Details on the Summary page), the shift differential will also apply to any paid time off (sick days, vacation, PTO, holidays, and death in the immediate family). This does not apply to staff who work rotating day, evening, night, and/or weekend shifts.
  5. If an employee who typically works the evening or night shift is temporarily assigned to the day shift, they will not receive any shift differential for the hours worked during the day shift, unless a differential is applicable based on the above criteria.
