Student Hackathon

A contest to challenge students to solve campus sustainability problems

About the program

The Hackathon, also known as Too Sustainable to Handle, is a two-day competition where student teams work together to form creative solutions to pressing sustainability issues on campus.

Organized by Team Green, Too Sustainable to Handle challenges students to create a proposal on solutions to a given topic. The two-day competition involves an initial meeting to introduce Team Green, go over background information, and present the content and rules of the contest. Students will have until the following day to come up with the best proposal they can and be ready to present their ideas to a panel of hand-selected judges, as well as the other teams. The selected winners will receive a prize!

2025 Too Sustainable to Handle

This year’s competition took place in February. The challenge posed to student participants was “How can we change student behavior to reduce food waste at the University?”

The winner of the 2025 Hackathon competition was Team Sunshine, who proposed three solutions for tackling food waste:

  • Improved design for reusable clamshell takeout containers
  • Portion size adjustment for mindful eating, where different size portions are offered at dining halls
  • Implementation of compost benches in student housing areas.

The winning team’s ideas have been brought forward to the relevant departments at the University to discuss implementation.

Thanks to the student teams and special guest judges that participated in making this event a success.
