Introduction to the History of Photography

Session A-6wk (May 19-June 27)
TWR 10:00 a.m. - 12:55 p.m.; Morey 205
CRN 18731; D. Rushton

Since it first captured the public imagination during the late 1830s, photography has emerged as a significantly popular and influential visual form. Today, as works of art, personal snapshots, legal documents, commercial advertisements, photojounalism and in many other applications, photographs are ubiquitous and powerful conveyors of cultural meaning. This course will investigate the cultural power of the photograph by surveying its history from the nineteenth century to the present. The primary task of the course will be to develop a familiarity with a wide range of genres and social functions of image production with an emphasis on key figures in American photography and artistic movements of the periods. Lectures and class discussions will chronologically explore the diverse uses of photography, its reception and recent critical debates. Film screenings and scheduled visits to the photo collection and archives at the George Eastman House will supplement classes.

In this course we look at anime/manga, film, photography, fine art, architecture and fashion. The class also investigates the recent phenomenon of “otaku” culture among Japanese youths with obsessive interests in anime and manga.
