EVENT: 'She Quietly Considers,' photographic exhibition by Christine Shank

TIME, DATE, AND PLACE: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, from Tuesday, Sept. 5, through Sunday, Oct. 1, in the Hartnett Gallery in Wilson Commons on the University of Rochester's River Campus

ADDITIONAL EVENT: Reception and artist talk, 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, in the Hartnett Gallery

ADMISSION: Free and open to the public

To explore how images conjure up stories, Shanks constructs and then photographs rooms showing the aftermath of a disaster. Looking through the doorways in the photographs, the viewer becomes an eavesdropper and silent observer on feelings evoked by a room filled with crumpled paper or a bricked-up passageway. The color 20-by-30-inch photographs are displayed in white shadow box frames. Shank teaches photography in the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.
