Leadership in Health Care Systems

Overview

The Leadership in Health Care Systems curriculum is broadly interdisciplinary with a focus on the “big picture” opportunities and challenges facing healthcare systems. Through hybrid coursework and a hands-on capstone project, students sharpen their skills as a manager or leader and learn best practices to ensure efficient, quality, and safe patient care delivery systems. Not only do graduates gain real-world management experience, but they forge invaluable professional relationships as well.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Lead effective high-performance interprofessional teams to meet high-reliability organizational goals in diverse healthcare environments.
  2. Demonstrate evidence-based leadership skills to facilitate trust and consensus building in diverse healthcare environments.
  3. Create cultures of diversity and inclusion by advocating for racial and social justice, health equity across diverse healthcare settings, and a health work environment which fosters attainment of a diverse workforce.
  4. Apply principles of continuous quality improvement in daily and strategic operations as a catalyst for change to optimize stakeholder outcomes in the presence of dynamic healthcare environments.
  5. Utilize economic, financial, and health outcomes data to support organizational decision-making, attainment of strategic goals, and effective operations in a variety of healthcare environments.

Program Goals

  1. Prepare healthcare leaders to provide strategic and sustainable leadership with clear and visible values and to create organizational environments that support optimal patient and faculty outcomes and high employee engagement.
  2. Prepare healthcare leaders to support evidence-based practice and inquiry relevant to improving health and complex healthcare systems.
  3. Prepare healthcare leaders to create environments that foster innovation and continuous learning.

The School of Nursing uses an online self-managed application process. Applicants are required to complete all portions of the online application and submit the following documents:

  • Current Resume or CV
  • Transcripts of all prior college-level work
  • Letters of recommendation from members of the academic community and/or workplace professionals who know your qualifications for graduate study. Preferably, at least one recommendation should be from a former professor. At least two letters are required for master's and advanced certificate applicants and three for doctoral applicants. Letters of recommendation are managed on the online application.
  • Current RN license
  • English proficiency scores for non-native English speakers
  • Application fee
  • Short answer responses and essay

After the application is reviewed, the candidate will be contacted to schedule an interview with a School of Nursing faculty member. Program faculty conduct a holistic review of each application.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited school or equivalent master's RN license-qualifying degree in nursing
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Minimum grade of C in undergraduate statistics
  • One year of experience in the healthcare industry
