Nursing Education

Overview

The Master's in Nursing Education program is designed for experienced working nurses who want to transition to a teaching role, either as a nurse educator or in patient safety and education.

By earning a master's degree in nursing education, graduates can change their career path without changing careers, which will broaden opportunities for advancement and allow for a more regular work schedule. Students learn the proven methods and technologies of effective teaching.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Function as educational leaders and change agents by advancing evidence-based teaching and learning practices and systems at the local, regional, and national level.
  2. Demonstrate scholarly inquiry of current evidence to drive change in clinical and academic practices.
  3. Implement learner-centered pedagogy in clinical and academic settings that facilitates learning to achieve desired cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes.
  4. Apply educational leadership skills across intra/interprofessional teams to foster collaboration and transform clinical and academic nursing education.
  5. Contribute to the scholarship of nursing education through discovery, teaching, and integration.
  6. Promote social justice, inclusion, and equity in clinical, academic, and community settings.

Program Goals

  1. Prepare educational leaders who will model evidence-based practices in teaching and learning and interprofessional practice in academic, clinical, and community settings.
  2. Prepare educational leaders who are actively engaged in the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  3. Prepare educational leaders who will lead with integrity, demonstrating attainment of national nurse educator and graduate nursing education competencies.

The School of Nursing uses an online self-managed application process. Applicants are required to complete all portions of the online application and submit the following documents:

  • Current Resume or CV
  • Transcripts of all prior college-level work
  • Letters of recommendation from members of the academic community and/or workplace professionals who know your qualifications for graduate study. Preferably, at least one recommendation should be from a former professor. At least two letters are required for master's and advanced certificate applicants and three for doctoral applicants. Letters of recommendation are managed on the online application.
  • Current RN license
  • English proficiency scores for non-native English speakers
  • Application fee
  • Short answer responses and essay

After the application is reviewed, the candidate will be contacted to schedule an interview with a School of Nursing faculty member. Program faculty conduct a holistic review of each application.

Graduate study at the University of Rochester School of Nursing integrates nursing practice, education, and research. The curriculum for the master’s degree program includes professional advanced-practice nursing core courses and clinical specialty courses. The professional core courses provide common substantive areas of study for students including clinical and experiential learning experiences.
