The University’s newest inductees into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society include 118 seniors and 16 juniors. Another 13 seniors were elected as juniors last spring.
Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kapp is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society. Membership is by invitation only, and students are selected by faculty members who are also members of the society.
The students will be initiated in a noon ceremony on Saturday, May 18 at the Larry & Cindy Bloch Alumni and Advancement Center. Josh Dubler, assistant professor in the Department of Religion and Classics, will deliver the keynote address.

The University’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter was founded in 1887. Members are chosen based on exceptional academic performance and a letter of recommendation from a faculty or staff member. New members are elected each spring by members of the Iota chapter at the recommendation of the nominating committee.
Particularly strong candidates are elected as juniors, the rest as seniors.
