
Danny Wegman elected University board chair-elect, four new trustees named at May meeting
The University Board of Trustees elected Rochester business and civic leader Danny Wegman as board chairman-elect at its May meeting, to begin a five-year term following the May 2016 Board meeting. Wegman, CEO of Rochester-based Wegmans Food Markets, Inc., has served as a University trustee for more than 15 years.

Public Safety investigator Lorraine Strem honored by Rochester Press-Radio Club
Strem, who recently joined Public Safety from the Rochester Police Department, received the Hometown Heroes award for her efforts to bring greater awareness to the issue of domestic violence and greater support to victims and families.

Xerox employee honored by Public Safety for selfless action
On the evening of April 13, at the intersection of McLean Street and Wilson Boulevard on River Campus, Ocieka Bakou, a local Xerox employee, selflessly intervened to prevent a violent crime from progressing into a possible tragedy.

University announces 2015 commencement honorary degrees and award recipients
The University of Rochester will recognize the outstanding contributions of distinguished leaders and scholars by bestowing honorary degrees, the Eastman Medal, Hutchison Medals for exemplary service, and awards for scholarship and teaching. Deborah Bial, founder and president of the Posse Foundation, will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree and deliver the College’s commencement address on May 17.

Gloria Culver appointed dean of the School of Arts & Sciences
Gloria Culver has been appointed dean of the School of Arts & Sciences, effective immediately. Culver has been serving as interim dean since July 1, 2014.

Robert and Pamela Goergen commit $11 million to Institute for Data Science
Trustee Robert B. Goergen and Pamela M. Goergen have committed $11 million to the University’s Institute for Data Science. In recognition of the Goergens’ commitment, the institute will be named the Goergen Institute for Data Science.

The Meliora Challenge campaign surpasses $1.2 billion initial goal
On the way to $1.2 billion, the University has met—and is currently exceeding—its campaign goals for faculty ($350 million) and the Annual Fund ($130 million). Campaign support to date has established 93 new endowed professorships throughout the University, which has exceeded the original goal of 80.
University of Rochester sets tuition rates for 2015-16
Tuition for University of Rochester undergraduates in The College will rise 2.8 percent to $47,450 in the 2015-16 academic year. Room and board will be $14,294, a 4.8 percent increase. The total cost of attendance increase is 3.3 percent.
Rob Clark comments on bipartisan ‘Manufacturing Universities’ bill
The Manufacturing Universities Act of 2015 would establish a program within the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) charged with designating 25 schools as “Manufacturing Universities.”

University named Tree Campus USA for fifth straight year
The University’s Horticulture and Grounds Department achieved the Tree Campus USA title by again meeting the program’s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures toward trees, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning projects.
