Emerging Leaders Program

The mission of the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is to facilitate the development of leadership skills, and to promote excellence, individuality, and group cohesiveness among current and emerging leaders affiliated with the Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) at the University of Rochester.

Program Goals

  • Recognize emerging leaders affiliated with OMSA.
  • Help emerging leaders to be self-aware and identify their leadership style.
  • Broaden understanding of leadership on a college campus.
  • Prepare emerging leaders to take on leadership roles and to promote involvement and inclusion within the broader university community.
  • Foster a sense of community and help emerging leaders build their village and network.
  • Provide emerging leaders with effective ways to identify, utilize, and leverage resources.

Through a series of interactive and culturally based structured workshops and team-building exercises, participants have the opportunity to discuss important social, personal, and multi-cultural current issues as they relate to leadership. The skills gained through ELP enables students to:

  • Define leadership as a continuous learning process, skill/competency and value.
  • Gain confidence to take advantage of leadership experiences on campus.
  • Navigate the University's departments and resources effectively to engage in various opportunities.
  • Engage both their immediate and neighboring communities in constructive and lasting ways.

Program Eligibility

ELP is open to all students who have not held any executive board position at the university, whom are affiliated with OMSA, and who would like to learn what leadership looks like at the university. ELP is intended to help prepare students to be well-rounded and proactive leaders who strive for academic excellence and campus engagement by finding a sense of community.


ELP offers many workshops ideal for gaining new skills, which are applicable to any organization or personal enrichment. Topics we’re likely to cover:

  • Leadership Theories & Styles
  • Manage Mental Health/Trauma & Well Being
  • How the University/College works
  • How to Navigate Emotional Intelligence and Energy
  • Build Your Network


  • Opportunities to acquire and sharpen leadership and communication skills while building personal and professional networks.
  • Invitations to exclusive programs and events.
  • Resume builder to highlight leadership training.

Deadline, Submission, and Program Date Details

Please submit your application online by February 5, 2021 for spring 2021 participation. Participants will be notified on February 12, 2021.

The program will meet via Zoom:

Saturday, February 27 and March 6 from 12:30-4 p.m. EST

Saturday, March 13 and March 20 from 12:30-4 p.m. EST

Friday, April 9 from 1-3 p.m. EST (ELP Virtual Ceremony)

You will be notified of program acceptance via email. You must respond via email to confirm your participation by February 12. By submitting an application you understand that you need to commit to all four dates in February and March, complete a capstone project, and present your project in a closing ceremony in order to fully complete the ELP requirements to obtain your certificate.
