Health Insurance & Immunizations for Visiting Scholars

All full-time visiting scholars and any accompanying family members are required to have adequate health insurance, per visa regulations. Visiting scholars receive additional information about health insurance from the International Services Office (ISO). This includes options for a University-sponsored foreign national not eligible for health insurance through the University of Rochester.

Buying and maintaining health insurance for yourself and accompanying family members is a condition of your visit. Non-compliance may result in termination from the program.

J-1 Federal Requirements for Health Insurance

J-1 program participants and their dependents are required to have medical insurance coverage for the duration of their program. This coverage must include the following minimum benefits:

  • Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
  • Payment for repatriation of remains in case of death in the amount of $25,000
  • Payment for medical evacuation in the amount of $50,000
  • A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
  • An insurance policy secured to meet the benefits requirements must be underwritten by an insurance corporation with an A.M. Best rating of “A-” or above, an Insurance Solvency International, Ltd. (ISI) rating of “A-I” or above, a Standard and Poor’s Claims Paying Ability rating of “A-” or above, or a Weiss Research, Inc. rating of B+ or above.
