In Memoriam

Remembrance: Mourners carried white roses at a memorial ceremony during Meliora Weekend.

In a somber ceremony that highlighted the personal price of freedom, mourners gathered during the College's Meliora Weekend to remember the Rochester alumni killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Speakers at the "Ceremony of Hope and Remembrance" sought solace in hope for the future.

"The strengths that built this nation, the ideals of freedom supported in institutions of academic inquiry, are the greatest hope for the future, and these ideals must remain as durable now as they have been in the past," said President Jackson.

William Scott Green, dean of the College, urged gatherers to look for meaning in the tragedies.

"The alumni we acknowledge today are part of our national narrative," he said. "They were busy creating lives of freedom. Their stories are our stories. We remember them with sadness, respect, and determination."
