Emerging Leaders Program
The mission of the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is to facilitate the development of leadership skills, promote excellence, individuality and group cohesiveness among current and emerging leaders affiliated with the Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) at the University of Rochester. Through a series of structured workshops and seminars, participants will have opportunities to discuss important social, personal, multi-cultural and other current issues.
- Recognize emerging leaders affiliated with OMSA.
- Help emerging leaders to be self-aware and identify their leadership style.
- Broaden understanding of leadership on a college campus.
- Prepare emerging leaders to take on leadership roles and to promote involvement and inclusion within the broader university community.
- Foster a sense of community and help emerging leaders build their village and network.
- Provide emerging leaders with effective ways to identify, utilize, and leverage resources.
Through a series of interactive and culturally based structured workshops and team-building exercises, participants have the opportunity to discuss important social, personal, and multi-cultural current issues as they relate to leadership. The skills gained through ELP enables students to:
- Define leadership as a continuous learning process, skill/competency and value.
- Gain confidence to take advantage of leadership experiences on campus.
- Navigate the University's departments and resources effectively to engage in various opportunities.
- Engage both their immediate and neighboring communities in constructive and lasting ways.
ELP is open to all students who have not held any executive board position at the university, whom are affiliated with OMSA, and who would like to learn what leadership looks like at the university. ELP is intended to help prepare students to be well-rounded and proactive leaders who strive for academic excellence and campus engagement by finding a sense of community.
ELP offers many workshops ideal for gaining new skills, which are applicable to any organization or personal enrichment. Topics we’re likely to cover:
- Leadership Theories and Styles
- Manage Mental Health/Trauma and Well Being
- How the University/College works
- How to Navigate Emotional Intelligence and Energy
- Build Your Network
- Opportunities to acquire and sharpen leadership and communication skills while building personal and professional networks.
- Invitations to exclusive programs and events.
- Resume builder to highlight leadership training.
Deadline, Submission, and Program Date Details
Please submit your application online by March 10, 2023, for spring 2023 participation. Participants will be notified on March 13, 2023.
The program will meet in person on Wednesday, March 15, Wednesday, March 22, and Wednesday, March 29 from 5-7 p.m., and on Saturday, March 18, Saturday, March 25, and Saturday, April 1 from noon-2 p.m. unless otherwise specified.
If accepted, you must commit to attend ALL dates, complete a capstone project, and present your project in a closing ceremony to fully complete the ELP requirements to obtain your certificate.
You will be notified of program acceptance via email. You must respond via email by March 15 to confirm your participation.
