  • Navigating research as an international student

What advice do you have for prospective or new researchers?

As an international student, I wish I had known earlier that there are ways to pursue meaningful research even when funding, eligibility, and networking opportunities can create additional barriers. My biggest advice is to be proactive, reach out to professors, ask about opportunities that may not be publicly advertised, apply broadly, and not be afraid to ask for guidance or mentorship. You do not need to have extensive experience or a perfect research plan to get started; showing genuine curiosity and a willingness to learn can take you a long way.

I hope to be a resource for other international students by sharing what I have learned and helping them navigate these barriers so they can find research opportunities where they can grow and make meaningful contributions.
