What advice do you have for prospective or new researchers?
I wish I had known that you do not need to fully understand a research field before reaching out to a professor or joining a lab. Much of research is learned by doing, asking questions, and becoming comfortable with experiments not working as expected. I would also encourage new researchers to explore different areas and focus on finding a lab and mentor that are a good fit rather than feeling pressured to have their interests completely figured out. Most importantly, take initiative and do not be discouraged by uncertainty or rejection!nge of possibilities and topics. No one is expected to know or understand everything, so simply follow your curiosity and the rest will follow.
