Engineering professor named one of Popular Science’s ‘Brilliant 10’
Michael Giacomelli, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering, is among the early-career scientists and engineers being recognized as one of Popular Science’s Brilliant 10, a roster of early-career scientists and engineers whose work is moving the goalposts in their respective fields. Giacomelli is developing novel technology that would enable surgeons to detect within minutes whether a potential nonmelanoma skin cancer is malignant and, if so, whether surgery to remove it is successful.

Eastman Opera Theatre announces its 2021–22 season
University flags will be lowered Thursday, September 30, for Leslie Hammerl, an insurance collection specialist in patient financial services, who died on September 2. Hammerl joined the University staff in 2015.
The Center for Community Engagement in the College invites Students’ Association–recognized student organizations to apply for Community Engagement Challenge grants. These grants of up to $500 each are intended to support projects that build and strengthen ties between the University and the city of Rochester. Tuition reimbursement at other colleges and universities

Online public lecture: ‘The Global Refugee Crisis: A Philosophical Analysis’
The Humanities Center welcomes Serena Parekh, a professor of philosophy at Northeastern University, for the first public lecture in the yearlong Sawyer Seminar series on migration. Parekh will discuss formulating a morally adequate refugee policy in light of the two global refugee crises—the well-known one faced by Western states, and the lesser-known one faced by refugees themselves.
