Scientists leverage ultrasound to build new blood vessels in living tissue

Biomedical engineers at Rochester led by Diane Dalecki, the Kevin J. Parker Distinguished Professor in Biomedical Engineering and director of the Rochester Center for Biomedical Ultrasound, are leveraging ultrasound waves to organize endothelial cells—the building blocks of blood vessels—into patterns that can promote the growth of new vessel networks within days.

Flags will be lowered for Tammy DeSue

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, September 19, for Tammy DeSue, a physician support specialist, who died on August 20. DeSue joined the University staff in 2019.

Network your way to career success as an international student

Join the Greene Center in the Computer Studies Building, Room 209, today at 2 p.m. for the second of a three-part series designed specifically for international students who are looking to navigate the internship and job market in the United States. Topics will include the importance of building a network, steps to build your network, how to have career conversations and create networking notes, and what resources are available at Rochester to help you network. Get involved in undergraduate research

Looking for research opportunities? Not sure how to get started? The Office of Undergraduate Research will host an information session with a student panel of Research Ambassadors currently doing research. Ask questions about getting started in research at the University and learn their best advice. All class years and majors are welcome. Attend on Tuesday, September 17, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Hoyt Auditorium. Email undergradresearch@ur.rochester.edu with questions.

Mandatory responsible conduct in research training for NSF-funded PIs

The National Science Foundation (NSF) requires all currently funded NSF PIs, co-PIs, and senior personnel to complete responsible conduct in research training as a condition of accepting NSF funding. To meet this requirement, the University offers this training through CITI (RECR for UR NSF Funded Investigators) and includes topics on research misconduct and mentorship. Find information on how to access the training in CITI, as well as other resources and training, through the Office of the Vice President for Research. The Office of the Vice President for Research will be following up with NSF investigators who have not taken the training by September 30.

Well-U’s nosh-worthy knowledge

Register for Well-U’s Nutrition Basics program starting on Tuesday, September 17, at noon to learn today’s trends in nutrition and the components you need for a healthy dietary plan. Once you complete the program, you will also earn your $100 incentive.

Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness’s Creative Arts Therapy Program will hold a talent showcase on Friday, September 13, at 7 p.m. featuring arts performances by youth engaged in mental health services. Data Bloom workshop series

It’s time again for Data Bloom, a workshop series designed to help you create attractive data visualizations and learn skills to better manipulate your data. In the second year of this workshop series, the River Campus Libraries can help you take your Excel, R, Python, Tableau, ArcGIS, and Data Visualization skills to the next level. At the end of the series, students can submit to the Data Visualization Competition where five prizes will be awarded including Best Undergraduate, Best Graduate, and People’s Choice. Inaugural George Walker Center recital series

The George Walker Center for Equity and Inclusion in Music at the Eastman School of Music announces the inaugural season of its recital series beginning this fall, showcasing a diverse range of musical talent and offering an inclusive platform for performances that celebrate underrepresented voices in classical music. Paul R. Judy Center for Innovation and Research grant applications due October 1

All US-based musicians and musical arts organizations are invited to apply for grants from the Paul R. Judy Center for Innovation and Research—a division of the Institute for Music Leadership at the Eastman School of Music—by October 1. The grant program will support innovative projects and research focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion in all elements of the music profession, with a prioritization of projects that advance anti-racism work in the arts. The center seeks projects and research that have the potential for lasting and sustainable change. Grant awards range from $5,000 to $10,000. Learn more and apply here.

Relax and Renew Retreat

Discover tranquility and rejuvenation at the Mindful University Project’s Relax and Renew half-day silent meditation retreat, open to all students, faculty, and staff. Immerse yourself in four hours of noble silence with guided practices like breath awareness meditation, gentle yoga, mindful walking, and more. The event, cofacilitated by experienced teachers from the Mindful University Project, takes place on Saturday, October 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Interfaith Chapel, River Campus. The 29th annual Pediatric Nursing Conference will help provide pediatric nurses with current, evidence-based information regarding advances in medical treatments, including mental and community health issues, as well as updates regarding other critical issues facing children and families. Students in NROTC units from the Rochester area held their annual vigil Wednesday morning on Eastman Quadrangle to mark the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
