EVENT: Halloween “Spooktacular” Brass Concert at the University of Rochester

WHAT: The University of Rochester’s Brass Choir presents its fourth annual Spooktacular concert, “Welcome to My Nightmare.” The show will feature rock, metal, and pop music repurposed for brass instruments and includes new special effects, dramatic lighting, costumes, and opens with a juggling performance to set the stage for a dreamlike atmosphere.

The 30-member ensemble will perform works by Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and Amy Winehouse. In an ongoing tradition, musicians from the Rochester community will form a supersized low brass ensemble and perform “Big Bottom,” a song made famous by the movieThis is Spinal Tap, and “War Pigs,” by Black Sabbath.

Note: This performance features strobe lighting and other special effects and is not appropriate for very young children.

TIME, DATE, PLACE: 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, in Strong Auditorium on the University of Rochester’s River Campus. This concert is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required.

ABOUT THE BRASS CHOIR: Celebrating its fifth year, the UR Brass Choir, under founder and director Josef Hanson, is made up of undergraduate and graduate students as well as alumni. The ensemble has performed in a variety of venues, including Hendricks Chapel at Syracuse University and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and is dedicated to crafting music performances that are a bit out of the ordinary—from Renaissance music and fanfares to heavy metal.
