Twitter founder Jack Dorsey chose the name because "twitter" described "a short inconsequential burst of information.” And yet, the social network is anything but inconsequential in terms of data science research and its applications. Twitter, which went public on this date in 2006, is fertile ground for Rochester researchers interested in tracking everything from disease outbreaks to the dynamics of political campaigns and consumer preferences.

This spring, the inaugural crop of students in Rochester’s new data science programs—at the undergraduate and master’s degree levels—are completing their first year of study at the Goergen Institute for Data Science, a program of the Schools of Arts & Sciences.

Computer science graduate student Nabil Hossain and his collaborators have taught computers to analyze tweets about drinking to determine if people were actually drinking at the time they were tweeting and if they were tweeting from home or some other location.

The quadrangle enclosed by Robert B. Goergen Hall, Hylan Hall, the Computer Studies Building and the future Wegmans Hall will be transformed beginning next spring with new walkways, trees, seating, and a botanical rain garden.

The new building will be located at the current midway point of Hutchison Rd., in between Hopeman and Hylan buildings. As part of the overall construction plan, Hutchison Rd. will no longer be a thoroughfare and will be permanently reduced to only provide access into the Wallis Hall parking lot and Dewey Parking Lot.
