Newly appointed as director of the Institute for the Performing Arts, Missy Pfohl Smith talks about ideas and aspirations for the institute and discusses the status of the Sloan Performing Arts Center, slated to be operational by Fall 2020.

The Institute for the Performing Arts was formed in 2015 to bring together the disciplines of music, theater, and dance into a collaborative venture. Smith, who also serves as the director of the Program of Movement and Dance, is appointed to a three-year term.

Students, faculty, and alumni take their unique perspectives on difficult and controversial conversations into the community as part of the annual arts fest.

On Display, a “deconstructed art exhibit,” explores the diversity of the human form. The piece been performed around the world and had its Rochester premiere at the Memorial Art Gallery in October. A December performance is planned at the Disability Studies Cluster conference.

Seventeen artists from the region will take over ‘The Sunday School’ located in the back of the Rochester Lyric Opera Theatre for two evenings of site-specific installations, dance, and performance art organized by the University's Program of Dance and Movement.
