Transferring Credits to the University of Rochester

This page outlines the different types of transfer programs, as well as transfer credit guidelines.

Internal versus External

There are two main types of transfer agreements: ones within the University and with the University and an external institution.

Internal

Internal articulation agreements are University-approved combined and dual degree programs within the University of Rochester. These agreements can be between two different URochester schools, between an undergraduate and graduate program, or a mix of the two.

View internal agreements

External

External affiliation agreements are agreements between the University of Rochester and another institution. These agreements may cover things like courses, opportunities, and enrollment.

Transfer Credit by Program Type

For more information about transfer credit policies, please contact the Office of the Provost.

Graduate Degree Program Transfer Credit

Graduate-level coursework, completed both internally and externally, may be accepted for transfer credit into graduate degree programs at the University of Rochester. The primary purpose of the graduate degree program transfer credit policy is to ensure academic rigor and consistency by establishing clear guidelines for credit eligibility and maximum transfer allowances. This policy does not apply to combined degree programs (bachelor’s + master’s) transfer credits.

Advanced Certificate Program Transfer Credit

This policy outlines the conditions and limitations under which graduate-level coursework, completed both internally and externally, may be accepted for transfer credit into Advanced Certificate programs at the University of Rochester. The primary purpose of this policy is to ensure academic rigor and consistency by establishing clear guidelines for credit eligibility and maximum transfer allowances. This policy does not apply to graduate degree program transfer credits or combined/accelerated degree program (bachelor’s + master’s) transfer credits, which are governed by separate policies.

Articulation and Affiliation Agreements

Internal Articulation Agreements

Internal articulation agreements are University-approved combined and dual degree programs within the University of Rochester.

Combined degree programs are a type of degree program in which students are admitted to pursue two academic programs of different degree levels. Students may be admitted into both programs at the same time or may enter after matriculating into the first program (the latter sometimes referred to as accelerated programs).

A dual degree program is one program leading to two degrees offered by a single institution. Students are awarded the degree when the degree requirements for both academic programs are met (i.e., the educational credential for each degree is given at the same time).

For more information about combined degree programs, please contact the Office of the Provost.

4+1 Programs

4+1 Programs are a type of combined degree program in which students complete two academic programs at different degree levels (typically, bachelor and master’s), typically done using joint credit as part of an accelerated schedule. These programs follow the combined degree program transfer credit policy which limits the number of credits that can be transferred and double counted to up to 40 percent of the credits required for master’s program completion (a typical amount of transfer is 12 credits).

Currently approved articulation agreements include 4+1 bachelor’s to master’s combined degree programs within and between the following University of Rochester schools:

4+0 Programs

4+0 (“More in Four”) Programs are a type of combined degree program in which students complete two academic programs at different degree levels (typically, bachelor and master’s) on an accelerated schedule. Master’s programs that might be completed in two to three semesters are completed in one or two semesters through a combination of early graduation and the articulation of joint credit across the academic programs.

These programs follow the combined degree program transfer credit policy which limits the number of credits that can be transferred and double counted to up to 50 percent of the credits required for master’s program completion (a typical amount of transfer is 12 credits).

Currently approved articulation agreements include 4+0 bachelor’s to master’s combined degree programs within and between the following University of Rochester schools:

External Affiliation Agreements

External affiliation agreements are agreements between the University of Rochester and another academic institution. For more details, please contact the Office of the Provost.

Undergraduate Dual Admission or Enrollment

Dual degree programs involving high schools or community colleges are educational arrangements where students work toward two separate credentials at the same time through coordinated coursework between institutions.

In a dual admissions or enrollment pathway with high schools, students take college-level courses while still in high school.

In a pathway with community colleges, students are enrolled in a coordinated partnership and earn an associate degree from the community college, and then later a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester.

Currently approved affiliation agreements include the following institutions:

4+1 Master’s Pathways

In these agreements, the parties agree to create an affiliation pursuant to which students from undergraduate institutions can obtain a URochester graduate degree through program-specific arrangements and requirements.

URochester is solely responsible for its own admissions criteria, process, and acceptance decisions. Parties will collaborate to promote the affiliation and participating programs. No fees or other cost shall be charged to undergraduate students at participating institutions to submit an application to a participating graduate program.

For more information about 4+1 Master’s pathways, please contact the Office of the Provost.
