Overview

The Office of Minority Student Affairs (OMSA) is dedicated to supporting students from a variety of backgrounds by providing resources, guidance, and opportunities for academic, professional, and personal growth. We strive to create an inclusive and enriching environment where all students can thrive. Through advising, educational initiatives, and strong campus partnerships, OMSA works to enhance the student experience at the University of Rochester.

We connect students with a range of on- and off-campus resources, helping to build the social and professional networks essential for success. Our mission aligns with the university’s broader outreach, recruitment, and retention efforts, ensuring that every student has the support needed to reach their graduation goals.

Student-Centered Approach

Many students describe OMSA as their “home away from home,” reflecting the deep sense of belonging we strive to cultivate. Our team is dedicated to providing a safe and affirming space where students feel valued, heard, and represented. With a blend of experience, cultural awareness, and innovative advising strategies, we tailor our support to meet the diverse needs of our students.

We go beyond traditional advising by accompanying students to key appointments, offering guidance during challenging times, and fostering a strong sense of community. Whether students engage with us through programs like HEOP and ECO or connect via faculty and staff referrals, we remain steadfast in our commitment to their well-being and success.

We recognize that race, culture, and identity are integral to the lived experiences of our students, and we are committed to advancing an inclusive campus culture that reflects the University of Rochester’s core values.

Campus Engagement and Collaboration

OMSA actively partners with campus organizations and committees to remain informed about student needs and to advocate for an inclusive and equitable university experience. Our involvement includes:

  • First-Generation Student Committee
  • Sophomore Experience Committee
  • College Diversity Roundtable
  • Student Life Awards Selection Committee
  • International Education Week Planning Group
  • LGBTQI+ Advisory Group
  • One Community Programming Fund Committee

By participating in these initiatives, we work to amplify student voices, foster a more connected campus, and ensure that all students—regardless of background—have the resources and opportunities they need to excel.
