PEN: American Exile: The Prison Industry

Where: The Cooper Union, Frederick P. Rose Auditorium, 41 Cooper Sq., New York City

The prison industry has become a profitable social solution. It hides and silences whole segments of our population: political resisters, radicals, as well as a disproportionate number of poor men and women of color. Their lock-ups purport to isolate dangerous criminal activity from the rest of society, but all too often they are sly, illegitimate ways to avoid, disguise, or justify social injustice. Listen to a panel of experts offer ways to reform this inequitable and ever-burgeoning industry.

With Michelle Alexander, John Lonergan, Susan Rosenberg, and Shahrnush Parsipur; moderated by Jackson Taylor
