UReading Program
Who?
University of Rochester undergraduates are encouraged to apply for the UReading program. Tutors receive a federal work study wage for their work with children in the Rochester City School District. The UReading program is sponsored by the Rochester Center for Community Leadership under the Office of the Dean of Students.
What?
The purpose of UReading is to help preschool children develop the language, literacy, math, and social skills necessary to succeed in school. Another purpose is to see that tutors develop new perspectives; an opportunity to develop and/or enhance teaching, leadership and organizing skills; raise their awareness and interest about the community and city school district; and gain additional insights into their own paths and values.
Tutors work 8-10 hours per week during the school year including UReading sessions with team and partner child 4 hours per week (twice a week for 2 hours); team planning 2 hours per week; and additional service activities to promote student success.
Tutors must complete 6 hours of pre-service training prior to entering the classroom. The purpose of the pre-service training is to provide new tutors with some basic information about child development, cultural competency, and how to get started as a tutor. Weekly team planning meetings serve as mini-trainings that allow tutors to discuss their successes and challenges, and to elicit support from peers. Additional development is provided through monthly trainings the content of which is determined by tutor interest and needs.
Tutors must be available to work either Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10am-12pm or Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:30am-10:30am.
Where?
Rochester City School District School 29, a four-year partner and host to forty Jumpstart Corps Members, enthusiastically welcomed thirty UReading tutors during the program’s inaugural semester.
How?
