Visual Studies Cluster

Our mission is to promote the study and analysis of visual culture across media, across disciplines, and across diverse constituencies. This cluster is based in Visual and Cultural Studies and Film and Media Studies, and it collaborates broadly: with the departments of English, History, Modern Languages and Cultures, Art and Art History, and Anthropology, with the Frederick Douglass Institute and the Susan B. Anthony Institute, and with the Eastman School of Music. We have mounted events in cooperation with the George Eastman House, the Visual Studies Workshop, the Memorial Art Gallery, RoCo (Rochester Contemporary), and with Mellon Humanities corridor initiative, which links the University of Rochester to Syracuse University and Cornell University. Recent activities have included: academic symposia and workshops; visits by artists, filmmakers, and scholars of visual culture; art exhibits; screenings of independent and experimental film and video.
