In a video for WIRED University alumna and Nobel Prize recipient Donna Strickland ’89 (PhD) explains the inner-workings of lasers to five different people: a child, a teenager, a college student, a graduate student, and, finally, to an expert: Mike Campbell, director of the Laboratory for Laser Energetics.

The link between data science and communications may not always seem so clear cut, but Harrison Frank ’19 is bringing his expertise in pattern recognition and strategic problem-solving to the University’s communications efforts as the new data scientist and design researcher.

The University of Rochester will recognize the outstanding contributions of distinguished alumni, educators, and scientists by bestowing the Eastman Medal, Hutchison Medal, and awards for scholarship and teaching.

The Albany, New York native is the first Rochester student or alumnus to receive this fellowship, which supports outstanding individuals interested in careers in foreign service.
