- The operating margin improved from 3.2% in 2002 to 4.4% in 2003.
- Improvement is primarily the result of increased revenue (7.6% growth) generated by expanded inpatient and outpatient services.
- Operating expenses increased 6.3%. Increases in professional liability insurance, medical supplies and temporary nursing costs were partially offset by $5.0 million in cost reductions.
- The non-operating revenue decline was the result of an extraordinary item, the sale of the hospital's outpatient dialysis service in 2002.
