Overview
The University of Rochester is committed to being a community that welcomes all students regardless of their sex, race, color, national origin, or religion. We will pursue approaches to cultivating inclusivity and a sense of belonging among our community members.
Any member of the University of Rochester community can submit a bias report if they know of an incident or conduct which may constitute discrimination or harassment that involves a student.
A bias incident is characterized as a behavior or act—verbal, written, or physical—which is personally directed against or targets an individual or group based on a protected characteristic.
Behavior reflecting bias may constitute a violation of the Student Code of Conduct.
Reports are reviewed by a staff member in the Center for Student Conflict Management who triages the reports to the assistant dean and director of the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center. Reports may also be sent to the Title IX Office (if it's a sexual misconduct incident) or to the Equal Opportunity Investigators (if the incident involves a University employee). The appropriate person will contact the individuals involved in the report, coordinate a response, and communicate with the University community (when appropriate).
What happens to my bias-related incident report?
Anti-Retaliation
The University's Student Code of Conduct expressly prohibts retaliation and describes it as, "Any act of intimidation or retaliation intended or likely to dissuade a reasonable person from making a complaint, furnishing information, or participating in a conduct process." The University of Rochester strongly encourages reporting bias incidents that occur on campus.
