“Broadening Participation” Workshop

Our "Broadening Participation" events have returned for the second year! These innovative sessions are the result of a collaboration between CETL and the local theatre-based training company Impact interactive, with special support from the Department of Chemistry.  Primarily designed to complement undergraduate Workshop leader training (see Workshop Program) with interactive theatre-based activities, these events have also been offered to graduate students, postdoc’s and faculty interested in issues of inclusivity and diversity in the classroom. Participants explore themes that underlie collaborative experiences and interact with trained actors to brainstorm possible strategies to deal with group facilitation issues. These sessions, facilitated by Impact interactive, include the interactive performance “In the Thick of It,” in which a series of fictional student characters, based on real experiences of students in UR Workshops, seem determined to give a hard time to their Workshop leader (What are these students thinking?!). As the audience is invited to interact with the characters, assumptions are challenged, characters’ stories revealed, and the possibility of a different learning experience emerge….

“Very educational, fun, and rewarding. I have already witnessed the benefits in my own workshop and will continue to implement these strategies in future teaching opportunities,” undergraduate Workshop leader, Spring 2017 session participant
