Eastman Students' Association Update

Student Diversity Fuels Students' Association

Eastman's small undergraduate community weaves a tight-knit social fabric where students' voices are heard and school-sponsored events are planned by the Eastman Students' Association (SA). Many changes in SA this past semester have strengthened and increased the effectiveness of this undergraduate governing body.

Erin McPeck is president of the Eastman Students' Association.

In September, the Eastman Students' Association, open to all undergraduates, began meeting to plan programming for the entire year. Clubs serving all interests, including academic, athletic, greek, religious, and social, collaborated with class councils and the executive board to propose and approve a budget for funding club operating expenses and programming for all students. After one semester, we are under budget and on target for carrying through planned events.

Most recently, the undergraduate body approved a new constitution for the Eastman Students' Association. The new constitution, drafted by board members of SA, clearly states our operating principles, provides better support for clubs, and delegates more responsibility to the class councils. In this way, SA can continue to represent and serve the Eastman community.

With weekly attendance at an all-time high, SA is effectively serving as a liaison between the students and administration. When questions concerning the plans to increase security arose, the administration promptly provided positive updates and entered into discussion with students. We are grateful for the healthy communication Eastman provides. The Office of Student Life has been integral in supporting SA. Ultimately, though, it is the diversity of students, interests, and needs that really power our student association.

On behalf of the Eastman Students' Association, thank you to all of the parents whose kids help make Eastman a place to thrive. I look forward to yet another rich semester serving Eastman's undergraduates, partnering with the College, and seeking to complement the classroom through the Eastman Students' Association.
