Acclaimed composer and cellist Robert Een is coming to the University of Rochester at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, with percussionist Hearn Gadbois as part of the Performing Artist Series sponsored by the Dance Program. His concert will be in the Spurrier Dance Studio on River Campus. Tickets can be purchased at the door and are $7 for the general public and $5 for University students.
Een, known for his extended vocal and cello techniques, is the recipient of a 1998 New York Dance and Performance Award ("Bessie Award") for music composition. He has recorded six albums of his music and written the scores for a number of films, including Mr. Jealousy, Trouble on the Corner, The Rook, and Guts. He also has composed music for dance for such choreographer/performers as Sara Pearson and Patrik Widrig, Liz Lerman, and David Dorfman.
Most recently, Een performed in New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles as part of the World Festival of Sacred Music and did a solo concert tour of Taiwan, India, and the United States. His works have been described as "colorful, intuitive compositions (that) are a mesmerizing intertwining of voice and cello" by the Louisville Courier-Journal. He and Gadbois have been performing together for over 10 years.
