The University of Rochester is the recipient of national awards for exceptional achievement in conference planning for its Sesquicentennial celebration, a joint collaboration of the Offices of Conference and Events, Alumni Relations and Development, and several other campus departments.
Mary Albee, director of the University's Conference and Events Office, was honored with the Outstanding Individual Achievement Award from the Association of Collegiate Conference and Events Directors - International (ACCED-I). Albee was recognized for her work managing the event.
ACCED-I also presented the University with the Outstanding Institutional Achievement Award for implementation of the Sesquicentennial celebration. The award acknowledges significant achievement by an institution in the conference and events field and may be based on a single event or on a more long-term development which represents an outstanding milestone in conference and events management.
The result of two years of planning, the celebration commemorated the University's 150th anniversary and was titled "Celebrate the Past, Imagine the Future." Taking place October 12 through 15 of last year, the Sesquicentennial celebration encompassed a variety of guests and events, from Nobel prize-winning speakers and famous actors and directors to symposia, reunion dinners for 18 of the University's graduating classes, concerts, and departmental open houses. Although 3,500 returning alumni were expected, almost 7,800 individuals and guests attended the four-day program.
During the Sesquicentennial celebration, Albee was instrumental in coordinating the efforts of the conference and alumni relations staff as well as the more than 150 student and staff volunteers. She was responsible for the logistics of coordinating facilities, food service, parking and transportation, security, and an outside registration company. Beyond ensuring that the campus activities ran smoothly, she also managed the VIP guests who attended the conference. Previously, Albee has done conference management at such companies as Smith, Bucklin, and Associates, Inc. and McGettigan Partners.
