October 27, 2009

Dr. Bernard T. Ferrari, a University of Rochester alumnus who is a former director and partner in the global management consulting firm of McKinsey & Company, was elected to the University's Board of Trustees this month.

A graduate of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in science cum laude, and of the School of Medicine and Dentistry with a medical degree in 1974, Ferrari's career as a surgeon took a new direction after he earned a law degree and an M.B.A. while he was the chief operating officer of Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans from 1985 to 1989.

"Through his accomplishments at McKinsey, augmented by his training and experience in medicine and law, Bernie Ferrari understands large institutions like our own in sophisticated ways," said University President Joel Seligman. "As a corporate strategist and advisor to multi-national corporations, he has the capacity and insight to design solutions and help us advance."

For 20 years, Ferrari was a partner in the Los Angeles and New York offices of McKinsey & Company. He retired in 2008 and started Ferrari Consultancy based in New York City.

"We are very pleased that Bernie Ferrari will bring his expertise from advising corporations and organizations to help guide the future of our University," said Edmund "Ed" Hajim, chairman of the University of Rochester Board of Trustees. "His insider's view of health care and many other industries adds to the strength and knowledge of our distinguished board."

Ferrari began his medical career as chief resident in surgery at UCLA from 1974 to 1979 before moving to New Orleans as a colon and rectal surgeon at the Ochsner Clinic. He earned a law degree magna cum laude from Loyola University in 1985 and an M.B.A. from Tulane University in 1986.

Ferrari and his wife, Linda, live in New York City. He is a trustee of The Juilliard School in New York; a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations; a fellow of the American College of Surgeons; and a fellow of the American College of Colon & Rectal Surgeons.
