Two nationally recognized faculty members at the Medical Center were recognized for their work this spring with appointments to new professorships established through the generosity of University alumni and friends.
In June, Stephen Hammes, a noted expert on reproductive endocrinology and chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Medical Center, was named the first Louis S. Wolk Distinguished Professor in Medicine (Endocrinology and Metabolism).
Named in recognition of the Louis S. and Molly B. Wolk Foundation, the professorship honors Louis Wolk, a prominent Rochester real estate entrepreneur and civic philanthropist. Founded in the late 1980s, the Wolk foundation, which supports health, education, and cultural resources, has been a generous supporter of the Medical Center, making leadership gifts to the Discovery Campaign for biomedical research and to the Highland Hospital Wolk Emergency Department campaign.
In May, Susan McDaniel, an expert on the integration of mental health care and clinical medicine, was appointed as the first Dr. Laurie Sands Distinguished Professor of Families and Health. McDaniel directs the Institute for the Family in the Department of Psychiatry at the Medical Center and is an associate chair of the Department of Family Medicine. Endowed by a gift from the Sands Family Foundation, the professorship is named in honor of the late Laurie Anne Sands ’76M (MD), who practiced internal medicine in Rochester from 1979 until her death in 1995.
Laurie Sands was the wife of Rochester neurologist Andrew Stern, a clinical assistant professor of neurology at the Medical Center, and she was the sister of Richard Sands, chairman of the board of Constellation Brands, and Rob Sands, president and chief executive officer of Constellation Brands.
