Abstract

How are archaeologists using cutting-edge scientific tools and approaches to learn more about the colonization of America? Director of Archaeology David Givens will discuss recent Jamestown Rediscovery investigations using DNA analysis of human remains, ground penetrating radar, genetic sequencing of animal populations, and predictive climate modeling to achieve comprehensive subsurface mapping, profile the lives and deaths of early Virginians, reconstruct Jamestown’s evolution, and anticipate the threats that climate change is posing to England’s first permanent American settlement.

This talk is of particular interest to archaeology, technology and historical structures, history, biology, and earth and environmental science majors, but everyone interested in science, history, and archaeology is welcome to attend.

Sponsored by the Archaeology, Technology and Historical Structures Program, and the Departments of History, Religion and Classics, and Mechanical Engineering. Refreshments will be served.
