Undergraduate Research in the Department of Music


Undergraduates in the music department typically carry out research through independent studies or honors projects, often in conjunction with a specific “track” for the music major (including tracks in theory, history, composition, conducting, popular music, and musical theater). Students usually work with a faculty adviser to define and carry out their specific research projects and are encouraged to discuss ideas with faculty at any time.

Undergraduate research in music has included academic projects (analysis and historical research), composition (musical theater and chamber works), and performance—including a recent project that culminated with a live performance of the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour.

They best way to get involved is to begin taking music courses and discussing your ideas with the faculty. We encourage a wide range of possibilities, including scholarship, performance, composition, technological study and entrepreneurship.
