Personal Injury/Exposure
This emergency procedure covers the following incidents:
- Clothing on fire
- Radiological spill on body
- Chemical spill on body
- Blood/body fluid spill on body
- Biological spill on body
- Hazardous material splashed in eye
- Minor cuts and puncture wounds
Clothing on Fire
- Roll person on the floor to smother the flames, or drench with water is safety shower is immediately available.
- Report fire to Security (x13).
- Obtain medical attention, if necessary (UHS, x5-1164).
- Report incident to supervisor and complete incident report form.
Radiological Spill on Body
- Unnecessary movement from this area shall be avoided to prevent the spread of contamination.
- Contact Radiation Safety at x5-3781 for assistance and to have person surveyed.
- Isolate the affected areas by controlling access to the area.
- Remove contaminated clothing.
- Rinse exposed area thoroughly with soap and water. Avoid the spread of contamination onto other skin areas.
- Obtain medical attention, if necessary (UHS, x5-1164).
- Report incident to supervisor and complete incident report form.
Chemical Spill on Body
- Flood exposed area with running water from faucet or safety shower for at least 15 minutes.
- Remove contaminated clothing immediately.
- Make sure chemical has not accumulated on shoes.
- Obtain medical attention, if necessary (UHS, x5-1164).
- Report incident to supervisor and complete incident report form.
Blood/Body Fluid Spill on Body
- Remove contaminated clothing.
- Intact skin — Vigorously wash exposed area with soap and water for 15 minutes.
- Broken skin/cuts/puncture wounds — Vigorously wash exposed area with soap and water for 15 minutes, pour 3% hydrogen peroxide over wound, or wash with Chlorohexidine or Iodofor.
- Mouth — Rinse several times with 3% hydrogen peroxide and then water.
- Obtain medical attention. Contact UHS at x5-1164 for post-exposure follow-up.
- Report incident to supervisor and complete incident report form.
Biological Spill on Body
- Remove contaminated clothing.
- Vigorously wash exposed area with soap and water for 15 minutes.
- Obtain medical attention, if necessary (UHS, x5-1164).
- Report incident to supervisor and complete incident report form.
Hazardous Material Splashed in Eye
- Immediately rinse eye and inner surface of eyelid with water for 15 minutes.
- Forcibly hold eye open to ensure effective wash behind eyelids.
- Obtain medical attention, if necessary (UHS, x5-1164).
- Report incident to supervisor and complete incident report form.
Minor Cuts and Puncture Wounds
- Vigorously wash injury with soap and water for several minutes.
- Obtain medical attention, if necessary (UHS, x5-1164).
- Report incident to supervisor and complete incident report form.
