NEWSPresident Seligman's Update on the Current Economic ChallengeIn a message today, President Seligman addresses the University's response to the current economic challenge and the impact to strategic plans, salary programs, construction projects, and the endowment. Protecting core programs and the quality of the University, he says, is the primary objective in responding to the economic challenge. Online Bill Payments Now AvailableStudents can now view and pay their student bills online through UR ePay and authorize a parent, guardian, third party, or employer to view their bill and make payments. Students can e-mail PDF copies of their bill and make payments electronically by eCheck or by Discover, MasterCard, or American Express (a 2.75 percent convenience fee applies). Study Abroad Info for ParentsInformation for parents of students interested in studying abroad is available online from the Center for Study Abroad. Get details about student health and safety, financial aid, forms, and more. Several new summer programs are offered this year and application deadlines are typically in March or April. Festival Highlights Women's Achievements in MusicNumerous events throughout the community will highlight the Eastman School's fifth annual Women in Music Festival. Running from March 23 through 27, the festival celebrates the contributions of women in all aspects of music, including composition, performance, teaching, and scholarship. Read more ... Financial Aid Deadline ApproachingThe application deadline for financial aid for the 2009-10 academic year is April 15. Students in the College were recently e-mailed information on how to access their financial aid application materials. Students must log into their account on FAOnline to access instructions for applying for aid and required forms. Parents Can Make Deposits to Student 'One Cards'Parents can add money to a student's One Card account through the Guest Deposits module. Go to http://my.rochester.edu and click on "Start Guest Deposit" to begin. One Cards can be used in dining centers, bookstores, laundry centers, copiers, and vending machines at the University. Viennese Ball Continues a University TraditionStudents can waltz the night away at the historic Harro East Ballroom for the 23rd annual Viennese Ball from 9 p.m. to midnight on Friday, March 20. There will be a live orchestra and performances by the Viennese Ball Opening Committee and others. Students are encouraged to wear that special dress or tux. Tickets are $15. Eastman Student Wins Spot in YouTube Symphony OrchestraEastman sophomore Nicholas Fitton won the piccolo seat in the YouTube Symphony Orchestra and will fly to New York City next month to participate in a classical music summit and perform in Carnegie Hall under world-renowned conductor Michael Tilson Thomas. Senior Awarded Churchill Scholarship Graduation FairSeniors will be able to pick up their graduation attire and get information and products from different departments during a Graduation Fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 3, in the River Campus Bookstore. Eastman School Participates in National Food DriveThe Eastman School is participating in the national food drive, "Orchestras Feeding America," sponsored by the League of American Orchestras. Monetary donations or donations of food items are being collected between March 16 and 30. All proceeds will be donated to Foodlink Rochester. Eastman students and staff also will be volunteering weekly at St. Martin's Place Food Kitchen in Rochester, helping to serve the noon meal on Wednesdays. Read more ... A Capella Group Tours Hurricane-Stricken AreasThe Midnight Ramblers, an all male a cappella group, embarked on a 10-day service tour to New Orleans to perform in several municipalities stricken by hurricanes Katrina and Gustav. The Ramblers performed in high schools, where artistic opportunities are limited, and for volunteers of several different service programs helping to rebuild communities. In addition, they held several public performances, from which all ticket sales and donations will be given to the Arts Council of New Orleans. See photos and blog entries from their trip. Students Can Learn About Off-Campus LivingStudents can learn about off-campus housing options during the Rochester Neighborhoods and Off Campus Living Bus Tour. The tour will show neighborhood options off campus, including details about the housing types, average rents, and transportation options in each neighborhood. Running from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, the tour will stop at an apartment to practice talking to a landlord and inspecting an apartment. Students can e-mail Robin Doughty to sign up. Online Ride BoardRoadtrip, the online ride board, connects students who are looking to carpool with those willing to give a ride. Students can log on to the service with their NetID.
