BOYD NAMED 1ST GIVENS PROFESSOR
Robert Boyd, professor of optics at the University, has been named the first M. Parker Givens Professor of Optics in recognition of his work with light, including confirmation of a century-old atomic prediction, creation of new materials, and understanding of quantum noise. The new professorship, which honors Professor Emeritus of Optics M. Parker Givens, was established through a gift from James Wyant '69 (PhD), a former student of Givens who now is director of Arizona's Optical Science Center. Boyd joined the University in 1977 after receiving his bachelor's degree from MIT and a doctorate in physics from the University of California at Berkeley. He has written two books, published more than 160 research papers, and has been awarded four patents. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America and is the past chair of the Laser Science Division of the American Physical Society. Wyant cofounded Wyko Corporation to design, manufacture, sell, and service
optical instruments for precision surface measurement. He has received five
U.S. patents and has published more than 130 papers on optics.
