1955
Masatoshi Koshiba (PhD), 2002 Nobel laureate, is urging young researchers to
“always keep in mind what you want to do in the future.” In an interview
with the Tokyo Daily Yomiuri last fall, Koshiba, a physicist, also said he continues
to make plans for future research.

1963
Juris Draguns (PhD), professor emeritus of psychology at Pennsylvania State
University, writes that he was awarded an honorary doctor of psychology degree
by the University of Latvia in Riga, Latvia, in recognition of his contributions
to research in psychology, especially in promoting collaborative international
research, and of his help in fostering the progress of psychology in Latvia.
1966
Jeffrie Murphy (PhD), a professor at the College of Law at Arizona State University,
was elected president of the Pacific Division of the American Philosophical
Association. He will serve as vice president beginning in July 2004 and as president
starting in July 2005.

1969
S. Michael Plaut (PhD), associate professor of psychiatry at the University
of Maryland, has cowritten a book, Sexual Dysfunction, that is intended for
primary care health providers. Mike writes that he is secretary of the Northeast
Group on Student Affairs and will be in Rochester in April for their meeting.
1971
Stanley McKenzie (PhD), provost and vice president for academic affairs at Rochester
Institute of Technology, was profiled in the November 7 issue of the Rochester
Business Journal. Before moving into his administrative role, he taught literature
at RIT and plans eventually to go back to teaching.
1972
Michael Braun S (MBA) (see ’71 undergraduate). . . . Anthony Raimondo
S (MBA), chairman and chief executive officer of Behlen Manufacturing in Columbus,
Neb., has been inducted into the Ak-Sar-Ben Court of Honor. Established in 1988
by Omaha’s philanthropic Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation, the award was
presented to Anthony for his contributions to business and industry.
1974
William Bond S (MBA) has been appointed vice president of technology commercialization
for Science Applications International. He will be responsible for transferring
technologies, usually developed under government programs, to the commercial
sector.
1975
José Coronas S (MBA), a partner in the Rochester-based venture capital
firm the Trillium Group, has been elected to the board of directors of CPAC,
the parent company of Fuller Brands and CPAC Imaging. He also serves on the
executive advisory committee of the Simon School’s Executive Development
Program. . . . Leonard Jason (PhD), professor of psychology and director of
the Center for Community Research at DePaul University, is an editor of Participatory
Community Research: Theories and Methods in Action. . . . Elliot Richman (PhD)
(see ’70 undergraduate). . . . Joseph Stulberg (PhD) received a lifetime
achievement award from the Washington, D.C.–based Center for Dispute Settlement
at the organization’s 30th anniversary dinner last September. He was the
center’s first director, from 1973 to 1975. Joseph is professor of law
and faculty director of the Program on Dispute Resolution at the Moritz College
of Law at Ohio State University. His son, Jonathan, is a freshman at Rochester.
. . . Robert Whipple S (MBA), a former executive at Eastman Kodak Co. and now
CEO of his own company, Leadergrow, is the author of The Trust Factor: Advanced
Leadership for Professionals.

1980
T. Alan Hurwitz W (EdD) has been named vice president for Rochester Institute
of Technology and CEO of its National Technical Institute for the Deaf. He has
served as dean of NTID for five years and will continue in this capacity as
well as a member of the president’s administrative council.
1981
Shigenori Morimoto S (MBA) has been named director of ITT Industries’
Value-Based Six Sigma, the company’s strategy for continuous improvement.
He joined ITT in 1990 after 17 years at Xerox.

Judiana Lawrence (PhD) joined the board of directors of the Rochester International
Council, a nonprofit organization aiding international students and State Department
visitors. She is an English professor at St. John Fisher College.

. . . Edmund Luzine S (MBA), whose assignments
over the past several years as a reservist with a civil affairs unit of U.S.
Army Special Operations have taken him from Bosnia to ground zero at the World
Trade Center site to Iraq, writes, “My two-year, all-expenses-paid tour
across central Asia and the Middle East has ended! I returned to the United
States on October 4. It took two weeks, along with the Columbus Day holiday,
at Fort Bragg, N.C., to fill out lots of paperwork, turn in gear, see old friends
in North Carolina, and get my new orders and honorable discharge. I am back
home in the Albany area, unpacking my life’s worth of belongings as I
move into a new home (my first after many years of New York City apartment living)
and sort through eight months’ worth of personal and business mail. Thank
you to all of you for your prayers, words of support, and assistance over the
past two years. I really appreciate it. Please don’t stop now—just
transfer your appreciation and prayers to my buddies still overseas. As for
me and my future, I hope to reopen my investment management business in January,
and we are working on plans to set up a mutual fund operation. It seems there
is a need for a decent and honest mutual fund manager to whom investors can
entrust their money. Plus, a number of state pension funds are now looking for

. . . Lori Taylor (PhD), an economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas,
has been named Texas’s principal researcher on public school finance.
She has moved with her husband and two sons, ages 2 and 4, to College Station,
Texas, where she will oversee a team of researchers who will analyze tax and
school funding formulas.

Mary Bickel ’69E (MM), W (EdD) e-mails that
in 2002 she and her husband, J. Terry Gates, began the Hoenny Center for Research
and Development in Teaching, a not-for-profit organization that seeks to develop
peer teaching programs in K–12 classrooms. More information can be found

. . . Amit Goyal (PhD), a senior staff member
in the ceramics division of the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National
Laboratory, has been named a principal editor of the Journal of Materials Research.
He also has been appointed to the international advisory board of editors for
the Journal of the Korean Institute of Applied Superconductivity and Cryogenics.
Amit lives in Knoxville, Tenn., with his wife, Sujata, and their son. . . .
Jeffrey Powers (MS) has been named an associate of Lowrie, Lando & Anastasi,
a law firm headquartered in Cambridge, Mass.
1992
In April 2003, Shirley Allen W (EdD) received the Rochester Black Deaf Advocates’
first Outstanding Pioneer Award in appreciation of her service and inspiration
to the black deaf community in Rochester. She also was honored by the national
organization, in August 2003, as one of the 20 most influential black deaf persons
in America. Shirley retired in 2001 from the National Technical Institute for
the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology and now lives in Austin, Texas.

Stephen Hodownes S (MBA), president and CEO of Concentrix Corp., was profiled
in the Rochester Business Journal last October. . . . Christopher Weiler S (MBA)
and Lynne Arnold ’99M (MPH) were married on April 26, 2003, in Penfield,
N.Y. She is in an accelerated nursing program at the University, and he is an
assistant vice president at Oppenheimer Funds.

David Cutitta S (MBA) has joined the Rochester law firm of Nixon Peabody, where
he works in the technology and intellectual property group. . . . Kelly Zou

Kathleen Mahoney W (PhD), president of the Humanitas Foundation, is the author
of Catholic Higher Education in Protestant America: The Jesuits and Harvard
in the Age of the University.

Martin Manalansan (PhD), an assistant professor of anthropology at the University
of Illinois, is the author of Global Divas: Filipino Gay Men in the Diaspora.

education. He plans to move from Brooklyn, N.Y., to Cleveland Heights, Ohio,
with his wife, singer-songwriter Elinor Blake, and their 1-year-old son, Lucian.
