1954
Donald Henderson (MD), ’77RC (HNR), a longtime professor at Johns Hopkins
University and founding director of its Center for Civilian Biodefense Studies,
will join others from Hopkins and the University of Pittsburgh to create a new
Center for Biosecurity. The researchers will develop models for dealing with
large numbers of bioterrorism victims. They also started the field’s first
peer-reviewed journal, Biodefense Quarterly.
1959
Michael Lamm (MD), professor of pathology at Case Western Reserve University,
has been named the 2004 recipient of the Gold-Headed Cane Award from the American
Society for Investigative Pathology, given in recognition of long-term contributions
to the field.
1963
Albert Wiley (MD) writes, “I retired from
radiation oncology as professor emeritus from the University of Wisconsin–Madison
but am now working as a senior physician for a Department of Energy Homeland
Security group, which is based in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and responds nationally/internationally
to radiation emergencies with the International Atomic Energy Agency. See www.orau.gov/reacts.”
1966
Michael Rosenfeld (MD), professor of medicine
at University of California–San Diego and a member of the Howard Hughes
Medical Institute, has been ranked among the most-cited researchers in the past
20 years by Science Watch, a subscription newsletter that tracks trends and
performance in research.
1969
Karen Hitchcock (PhD) announced in October that she plans to step down as president
of SUNY Albany at the end of the school year.
1970
Navy Rear Admiral James Johnson (MD) has been appointed director of the west
region of Tricare, the Department of Defense’s health care program. His
region encompasses 20 states and serves more than two million beneficiaries.
. . . Oncologist Donald Kufe (MD), professor of medicine at Harvard Medical
School, has joined the biopharmaceutical company Adherex Technologies as chairman
of its scientific and clinical advisory committees. . . . Philip Pizzo (MD),
dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine, has been elected to the
board of directors of California Healthcare Institute, a nonprofit public policy
research and advocacy organization.
1972
David Satcher (Res), director of the National Center for Primary Care at Morehouse
School of Medicine and former U.S. surgeon general, hosted a town meeting with
sixth graders from Rochester’s Enrico Fermi School No. 17 last September.
The event was part of the Medical Center’s initiative to make Rochester
the healthiest city in America by 2020.
1977
Barbara Araneo (PhD) is vice president of development at StemCells Inc.
1979
Francis Thomas (MS) has joined the University of Alabama as dean of the School
of Dentistry. Previously, he was chairman of the pediatric dentistry department
at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
1981
David Nash (MD), associate dean for health policy at Jefferson Medical College
of Thomas Jefferson University, was named one of the top 100 most influential
people in health care for 2003 by Modern Healthcare magazine. He also was named
the first chairman of the Office of Health Policy at Jefferson. The Dr. Raymond
C. and Doris N. Grandon Professor of Health Policy, David is the founding director
of Jefferson’s Office of Health Policy and Clinical Outcomes.
1983
Thomas Mahoney (Res), longtime board president of the Rochester Individual Practice
Association, has taken over as CEO. He was profiled in the September 12, 2003,
issue of the Rochester Business Journal. He lives in Henrietta, N.Y., with his
wife, Cheryl, and their two children, Erin, 19, and Kevin, 17.

1996
Joshua Goldstein (MD) married Irene Herman on November 15, 2003, in New York
City. He teaches at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago and directs
the residency program in pediatric neurology. She completed a clinical fellowship
in surgery in September.
1997
Jon Nezezon (MS) (see ’98RC undergraduate). . . . Kelly Zou (PhD) e-mails
that she received a National Institutes of Health grant as principal investigator
on neuroinformatics in image-guided neurosurgery. Her research will be funded
for three years.
1999
Lynne Arnold (MPH) (see ’93RC graduate). . . . Scott Ng-Evans (PhD) (see
’94RC undergraduate).
2001
Heather Ripstein (MD) married Jason Bonenfant on September 6, 2003. Heather
is an internal medicine resident at Strong Memorial Hospital, and Jason is a
financial advisor at Prudential Financial Services.
2002
Patrick Sarmiere (PhD) married Casey Edwards on September 27, 2003, in Guilford,
Conn. She is a physical therapist, and he is a postdoctoral fellow at Colorado
State University and recipient of a Christopher Reeve Foundation Grant. They
live in Fort Collins, Colo.
2003
Jonathan Baden (MS) married Melissa Hudecek on July 26, 2003, in Henrietta,
N.Y. Jonathan is a scientist in cancer diagnostics at Johnson & Johnson
Clinical Diagnostics, and Melissa is pursuing a master’s degree at SUNY
College at Brockport. They live in Brighton, N.Y.
