NANOTECHNOLOGY Big Designs at Small Sizes
(Photo: Adam Fenster)SCALING UP: Chris Striemer, a research scientist for the Rochester-based biotechnology company Simpore, adjusts the target on a high-performance system that deposits ultrathin films of metal onto the surfaces of other materials as part of a project in the University’s new Integrated Nanosystems Center. Located in Goergen Hall, the new center provides University faculty, materials scientists, and researchers at area companies with advanced technology to conduct research using materials at the scale of atoms and molecular structures. In the background is Brian McIntyre, the operations manager for the center, which will be formally dedicated at the start of the 2011–12 school year.
