Trek Leader role
Trek Leaders are the heart and soul of the University of Rochester First-Year Orientation Outing Treks (FOOT) program. You'll serve as a mentor, facilitator, and role model for a small group of incoming students during this multi-day pre-orientation experience that includes hiking, kayaking, indoor rock climbing, structured reflection, and community-building activities.

Key responsibilities
FOOT Trek Leaders are expected to:
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment that promotes belonging and connection among trekees
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor for incoming students throughout the program
- Facilitate group discussions, reflection activities, and community-building games
- Lead and support trekees during outdoor activities, including hiking, kayaking, and rock climbing, while following all safety protocols
- Assist with participant move-in, program logistics, and transitions between activities
- Monitor the physical and emotional wellbeing of trekees and respond appropriately to concerns
- Uphold University policies, risk management procedures, and emergency response protocols
- Communicate effectively with co-leaders, program staff, and University contacts using radios and other provided tools
- Support a smooth transition from FOOT into Fall Welcome Week and the broader University experience
Trek Leaders are entrusted with ensuring both the safety and overall experience of participants and are expected to act with professionalism, responsibility, and care at all times.
Qualifications
The Office of Orientation and New Student Programs is looking for Trek Leaders who:
- Are currently an enrolled first-year, sophomore, or junior undergraduate student at the University of Rochester in the School of Arts and Sciences, Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and/or the Simon School of Business
- Have the ability to commit fully to required training and program dates
- Possess strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
- Are willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Have the ability to support students from diverse backgrounds with empathy and respect
The following qualifications are preferred, but not required:
- Previous participation in FOOT as a trekee or Trek Leader
- Experience in student leadership, orientation programs, mentoring, or outdoor recreation
- Interest in leadership development, community engagement, or outdoor education
No prior outdoor expertise is required—training and support are provided.
Training and time commitment
As a Trek Leader, you'll receive extensive preparation to ensure you feel confident and supported in your role. Trek Leader training includes sessions on leadership development, facilitation skills, emergency procedures, and activity-specific preparation. Training also provides you with Adult First Aid, CPR, and AED certification, if needed.
Dates pertaining to Trek Leader commitments are still being finalized. Prospective applicants should be aware of the following tentative dates:

Move-In

Please note: This is the only move-in day for Trek Leaders. You cannot move in before or after this date.

The FOOT Trek Leader role is a select, unpaid leadership position that offers meaningful professional development and hands-on leadership experience. As a Trek Leader, you'll receive:
- Early move-in to on-campus housing on Friday, August 21, 2026 (for students living in University housing)
- CPR and First Aid certification at no cost, if not already certified
- All program meals are provided throughout the entire FOOT program
- FOOT program swag and gear
- Comprehensive training in leadership, facilitation, risk management, and emergency response
- Direct mentorship and support from professional staff in the Office of Orientation and New Student Programs
