Rochester: 150 Years and CountingThe University began celebrating its 150th anniversary in high style last fall, kicking off a year-long series of regional events that emphasized the national stature of Rochester and its influence. Alumni gathered in 19 cities--from Boston to San Diego and from St. Petersburg, Florida, to Seattle, and many spots in between--during the year. Held in prominent museums (the Denver Art Museum, Washington, D.C.'s Museum of Women in the Arts), architectural landmarks (San Francisco's Bank of America building), and well-known settings (Hollywood's Universal Studios), as well as in alumni homes, the gatherings relied heavily on alumni volunteers and enthusiasm for their success. Attendance reached as high as 350 people at some events, making them the largest regional gatherings of alumni ever held. With the theme of "Celebrate the Past . . . Imagine the Future," the Sesquicentennial highlights Rochester's achievements since its founding in 1850, and the people--alumni, students, faculty, staff, and others--who have made the University what it is. The main celebration is October 12-15, 2000, with a "super-reunion" on the River Campus. The year 2000 also marks the 100th anniversary of the admission of women and the 75th anniversary of the Medical Center.
