The National Science Foundation has selected Miguel
Alonso, assistant professor in the Institute of Optics, Wendi
Heinzelman, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering,
Michael King, assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering,
Kai Shen, assistant professor in the Department
of Computer Science, and Hong Yang, assistant
professor of chemical engineering, to receive CAREER awards, given to promising
scientists on the basis of creative proposals that integrate research and education.
Laura Calvi, assistant professor of medicine,
was one of 15 researchers nationwide selected as a 2005 Pew Scholar in Biomedical
Science, an award that includes support for her research on how cells in the
bone marrow influence the creation of blood cells.
Rita D’Aoust, director of the accelerated
bachelor’s and master’s programs for non-nurses, received the Health
Care/Science and Education Award from the Italian American Community Center
in Rochester.
Robert Dworkin, professor of anesthesiology,
neurology, oncology, and psychiatry at the Medical Center, received the Wilbert
E. Fordyce Clinical Investigator Award from the American Pain Society.
Medical Center CEO C. McCollister (Mac) Evarts ’57M
(MD), ’64M (Res) was awarded the Albert David Kaiser Medal by the Rochester
Academy of Medicine.
Robert McCann, chief of medicine at Highland
Hospital, received the 2005 Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians.
Kevin Parker, dean of the School of Engineering
and Applied Sciences, was named the William F. May Professor of Engineering.
The Rochester Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa recognized
Richard Ryan, professor of psychology, psychiatry, and education, for
his community contributions in education.
Sue Stewart, vice president and general counsel,
and Elizabeth McAnarney, chair of the Department
of Pediatrics and pediatrician-in-chief at Golisano Children’s Hospital
at Strong, were recognized by the Rochester Business Journal in the
paper’s annual list of the 20 most influential women among Rochester’s
business and community leaders.
The 2005 National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy recognized Nelita
True, professor of piano at the Eastman School, with the organization’s
lifetime achievement award for her service as a teacher.
David Williams, the William G. Allyn Professor
of Medical Optics and director of the Center for Visual Science, has been selected
to receive the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology’s
Friedenwald Award for his groundbreaking studies on human optics, human cone
receptors, and color vision.
