Skalny Center Director Honored
Ewa Hauser, director of the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European
Studies, has received one of Poland’s most prestigious awards for her
achievements in promoting Polish culture in America. Hauser, the first director
of the center, was selected for the Cavalier Cross of Merit, an award designated
by the president of Poland. Four members of the Skalny family of Rochester—Joseph
Skalny, Frederic Skalny, the late Stasia Skalny, and Anna Skalny—also
have received the Cavalier Cross.
Strong’s Programs Rank High
The geriatrics program based at Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital
earned a spot on the U. S. News & World Report’s annual survey
of “America’s Best Hospitals,” capturing the rank of 15th
best in the nation. Strong also ranked 31st in the nation in the magazine’s
category for treating “hormonal disorders,” which includes the overall
management of diabetic and other metabolic disorders, and ranked 42nd in neurology
and neurosurgery.
New Protestant Chaplain Named
The Rev. Laurie Tiberi has been selected as the new chaplain of the Protestant
Chapel Community at Rochester. Ordained in 1987 in the Presbyterian Church and
with standing in the United Church of Christ, Tiberi was chosen after a national
search by a committee that included faculty and alumni. Tiberi earned a bachelor
of arts degree from the University of California at Irvine, a master of divinity
degree and a doctor of ministry degree from Princeton Theological Seminary,
and a law degree from the City University of New York.
National Agency Gives Medical School Unprecedented Review
The School of Medicine and Dentistry is the first in the nation to receive
a six-year accreditation from the national agency that evaluates residency programs
to determine whether they are meeting a detailed set of standards. The medical
school received the unprecedented bill of academic health from the Accreditation
Council for Graduate Medical Education. The agency’s maximum accreditation
term had been five years.
Simon School Launches New Degrees Programs
Professionals have new programs at the Simon School to help boost their business
skills. Beginning this fall, the school is offering three new master of science
degrees in business administration, one with a concentration in marketing, one
in accounting, and one in medical management.
New Award for Rochester Writers Announced
The first winners of a new literary award for Rochester-area writers administered
by River Campus Libraries and Andrew Eiseman ’79 are expected to be selected
this December. Eiseman and the libraries announced the establishment of the
annual prize, the Andrew Eiseman Writers Award, last spring. Offered in the
categories of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, young people’s literature,
and playwriting, the award is open to writers who live within 50 miles of Rochester
and whose work has been published in the previous calendar year.
