“Education was always big for my parents and my other family members as well—they always knew the importance of education, they just didn’t understand it completely. The main thing my mother and my father always said was ‘We want you to go to college. We want you to have more than we had. And we think there’s more for you out there.’ That aspect that they wanted more for their kids—that was the push, that was the main thing they kept telling us. My grandmother always says, ‘Education is the bread and the butter.’ In a lot of instances parents understand the importance of education, they just don’t know the resources or the avenues to reach it.”
