Empowering Students and Scholars to Thrive

At the University of Rochester, academic excellence is at the heart of everything we do. The Office of Academic Excellence advances the University’s academic mission by partnering with faculty, deans, and senior leaders across all schools to strengthen the quality and impact of our programs, research, and student success initiatives.

Our work ensures that students have access to the people, programs, and opportunities that make a URochester education distinctive. We build the connections that help students thrive in a dynamic, collaborative, and supportive environment that encourages curiosity, innovation, and achievement.

A Collaborative Approach to Student Success

Through the coordination of academic support structures, we create stronger connections among academic and student life partners, improving the student experience from admission to graduation. This collaboration allows for faster problem-solving, better communication with students and families, and more seamless coordination across schools and units.

By aligning efforts across advising, assessment, experiential learning, and academic policy, we help ensure that every student benefits from a holistic support network designed to foster belonging, success, and lifelong learning.

The Rochester Curriculum: Learning Without Boundaries

Rochester’s distinctive undergraduate curriculum reflects the freedom, flexibility, and intellectual rigor that define our approach to academic excellence. Students pursue a major in one of three broad domains—the humanities, the social sciences, or the natural sciences and engineering—and explore the others through clusters of their own choosing.

This structure invites students to design their education around their interests, drawing connections across disciplines and developing the habits of mind that define true scholarship. The boundaries between schools fade, allowing students to move freely across programs and even pursue multiple majors that align with their evolving passions.

A Shared Commitment to Excellence

The units within the Office of Academic Excellence share a mission to foster a supportive, inclusive, and high-caliber academic community. Together, we drive innovation in teaching and learning, promote continuous program improvement, and enhance the University’s ability to attract and retain exceptional students and faculty.

Our work is guided by the “ever better” spirit of Meliora as we continually seek new ways to advance learning, discovery, and student success across the University of Rochester.
