Local Coffee Gems: Café Hopping in Rochester
As a graduate student navigating the hustle and bustle of academic life, coffee has become my trusty sidekick.

From the rich aroma of Americanos to the sweetness of lattes, there's something about that first sip that fuels my motivation and sparks creativity. I’ve watched countless peers turn to their favorite brews, relying on these warm cups of inspiration to tackle long study sessions and late-night projects.
But Rochester isn’t just a haven for coffee lovers—it’s a treasure trove of local cafés offering a delightful variety of drinks. Whether you’re a devoted coffee enthusiast or someone who prefers refreshing tea, decadent hot chocolate, or a fruity smoothie, you’ll find a cozy spot to recharge. Here’s a list of some of the best local coffee gems that make this city a caffeine lover’s paradise:
Java’s Café: Java’s has been roasting coffee in Rochester for nearly 30 years, so you bet they know what they’re doing. There are many locations throughout the city, and their Gibbs Street location opens every day till midnight! Their menu is extensive, with a variety of coffees, teas, cold drinks, and specialty drinks! They also offer food if you’re hungry. I would recommend the ice mocha, strawberry lemon tart, and bread pudding.
Ugly Duck Coffee: Ugly Duck is a local café located in Downtown Rochester. When you arrive, you might be greeted with a crowd, but don’t worry—they work quite fast (based on my personal experience). They have seating indoors and outdoors, so if you want to catch up on some work or reading, this is the place. But, be aware—there is no Wi-Fi. Definitely try “the snug” if you come here!
Sips Coffee & Café: Sips is a local, family-run café in Irondequoit. It is a bit of a drive from campus, but undeniably worth the trip. The café is a bit small, but their menu definitely makes up for it. I’ve had the best white chocolate mocha I’ve ever had from this place. I would also recommend getting the breakfast wrap, and if you’re vegetarian or vegan, they have many options for you!
Boulder Coffee: If you’re looking for a hip, funky café, Boulder is the place to be! In addition to the delicious drinks and food, Boulder offers plenty of space for you to work or hang out with your friends and peers over board games. And if you’re into singing, Boulder hosts an open mic throughout the week at night. The event is free and lots of fun! Their breakfast burritos are amazing!
Spot Coffee: Spot is a go-to place for students at UR, especially those at Eastman. The actual space is a former Chevy dealership but now it’s a huge café, with plenty of room to sip, talk, and work. There’s a wide selection of both breakfast and lunch options—I would recommend getting the chai latte and protein smoothie (mango)! If you do plan to study here, I would suggest a good pair of noise-canceling headphones, as it can get a bit noisy with the talking and music.
Village Bakery and Café: VBC has many locations throughout the city, but regardless of which one you go to, they all offer unbelievably delicious sandwiches and drinks! Although it is a bit of a drive, the Pittsford location is quite big and offers both outdoor and indoor seating. They have a pretty extensive drink menu and offer a variety of pastries! I would recommend the BALT.
