Morning Sessions
University Vision and Values –9:15-10:00 a.m.
On July 1, 2019 the College will be transitioning from the Communal Principles to the recently-adopted University Meliora Values. Please join us for a discussion of this process, and the ways in which these values can help us all create the community that UR aspires to be.
Admissions and Financial Aid: How it Works at UR –10:00 – 10:45 a.m.
Hear from members of the Financial Aid and Admissions Offices regarding current policies and practices associated with enrolling undergraduate students to the University of Rochester. A preliminary look at the enrolling class of fall 2019 (Class of 2023) will also be provided.
Embracing a 12-month Campus –11:00 – 11:45 a.m.
For a growing number of our students, the college experience follows a 12-month calendar, rather than the traditional fall and spring semester model. Students take advantage of traditional break periods to enhance and expand their educational experiences. In this session you will learn about initiatives and approaches being developed to support our students and set them up for success in their lives after College.
Afternoon Sessions
Cultural Humility
Cultural humility is a framework for supporting lifelong learning and reflection with the goal of addressing issues related to implicit bias by influencing and addressing power imbalances and structural inequalities. This perspective requires self-awareness, empathy, and an attitude of openness and curiosity. In this interactive workshop, you learn about the concept of cultural humility and explore ways to apply the principles to your personal and professional development. Participants of this workshop will be sent materials in advance that take about one hour to complete in order to fully engage in the workshop activities.
Financial: Summary Salary and Faculty Moving Expenses
The summer salary workshop is an interactive session covering high level principles such as effort allowable per policy, different benefit rates, handling salary cap situations, and other important guidelines relating to faculty working on research projects during the summer. We’ll examine exception requests where faculty seek approval for more than 2.5 months of summer effort. Attendees will learn from illustrative examples and discussion. The moving expense workshop will cover a typical scenario for faculty relocating to the University. Attendees will learn about compensatory guidelines, new tax laws on moving expense reimbursement plus many general guidelines for common storage, mileage, laboratory and personal moves.
Managing Conflict
This session will equip you with tools to explore ways to manage conflict in a professionally appropriate way to help achieve positive resolutions.
Staff Searches
One of AS&E's strategic priorities is to increase the diversity of our student, faculty and staff. This session will focus on best practices in hiring for staff positions, including avoiding implicit and explicit biases, and interviewing do's and don'ts.
Web Writing
In this web writing workshop, we will cover how to create website content that focuses on the goals and needs of your users.
